Air conditioning for better sleep
Sleep experts generally suggest a bedroom of around 16 to 18°C. On summer nights, many UK bedrooms stay well above that, especially top-floor rooms and lofts.
A wall-mounted system cools the room quietly with the window closed, removes humidity and switches to a quiet night mode. In winter the same unit heats the room efficiently.
A typical bedroom needs a 2 to 2.5kW unit. Larger main bedrooms and rooms with big windows may need 3.5kW. We size each room at your survey.
Rooms we cool
Every home is different, so we plan each room around how you use it.
Bedrooms
Quiet wall-mounted units with night modes, placed so air never blows straight onto the bed.
Living rooms
Larger units, or two smaller ones, to cool open-plan spaces evenly.
Home offices
Comfortable through long summer working days, without the noise of a fan.
Lofts and top floors
Usually the hottest rooms in the house, and the ones that benefit most.
Conservatories and garden rooms
Cooling in summer and efficient heating in winter for year-round use.
Flats and apartments
Compact systems with outdoor units on balconies or outside walls, with permissions checked first.
Fixed air conditioning or a portable unit?
Portable units are popular in heatwaves, but most people who buy one end up wanting a fixed system.
| Fixed wall-mounted system | Portable unit | |
|---|---|---|
| Noise in the room | Quiet, compressor is outside | Loud, compressor is in the room |
| Cooling power | Cools the room properly | Struggles in hot weather |
| Window | Stays shut | Needs a hose through a gap |
| Running cost | Low | Higher for the cooling you get |
| Heating in winter | Yes | Rarely |
| Floor space | None | Takes up floor space |

What is the best air conditioning for a bedroom?
For most bedrooms, a wall-mounted split system. It is far quieter than a portable unit because the noisy compressor sits outside, and it cools the room properly with the window shut. A typical bedroom needs a 2 to 2.5kW unit.
How quiet is bedroom air conditioning?
Modern Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric indoor units are designed to be quiet enough to sleep with on their lowest fan setting, with night modes that reduce noise further.
Is a portable air conditioner a good alternative?
Portable units cost less upfront but are noisy, take up floor space, need a hose out of a window and cool far less effectively. A fixed system is quieter, cheaper to run and also heats in winter.
Can you fit air conditioning in a flat?
Usually, yes. You will normally need the freeholder’s or management company’s permission for the outdoor unit, and some buildings need planning permission. We check this before quoting.
Can you fit air conditioning in a loft conversion or conservatory?
Yes. Lofts and conservatories are often the hottest rooms in the house. Wall-mounted or floor-standing units both work, depending on the wall space available.
How much does bedroom air conditioning cost?
A single bedroom system starts from £1,595 fitted. Two rooms on one outdoor unit start from £2,995.
